What Is Ceramic Coating?

A Smarter Way to Care for Your Vehicle's Finish

Ceramic coating is a liquid polymer that bonds directly to your vehicle's paint, creating a semi-permanent layer of surface enhancement. Unlike wax, which sits on top of the paint and breaks down within weeks, a ceramic coating forms a chemical bond that lasts for years. It repels water, resists UV damage, and makes cleaning your car significantly easier. The result is a vehicle that stays cleaner longer, looks glossier in any light, and holds its value over time. At Element Customs, every ceramic coating application begins with a thorough paint correction step to ensure your finish is in ideal condition before the coating is applied.

Precision at Every Stage

Our Ceramic Coating Process

Every coating at Element Customs follows a methodical process built around preparation. We never rush, and we never skip steps. Here is what to expect when you bring your vehicle to our Chatsworth facility.

  • Step 1: Hand Wash and Decontamination

We begin with a thorough hand wash to remove surface-level dirt and debris, followed by a full paint decontamination using an iron remover and clay bar. This eliminates bonded contaminants that a standard wash cannot reach, and is a critical step before any polishing or coating is applied.

  • Step 2: Paint Correction

Every ceramic coating package at Element Customs includes a paint correction step. Our technicians use machine polishers to address swirl marks, light scratches, and surface defects before the coating is applied. Applying ceramic over imperfect paint locks those flaws in permanently, which is why this step is never optional in our process.

  • Step 3: Panel Wipe and Surface Prep

After correction, each panel is carefully wiped down with a high-grade surface prep solution to remove any residual polish oils and ensure the paint is completely clean and ready to bond with the coating.

  • Step 4: Ceramic Coating Application

With the surface fully prepped, our authorized XPEL technicians apply the coating panel by panel in our dust-free environment. Coverage is extended to additional surfaces based on the package selected, including wheels, glass, plastics, vinyl, headlights, and taillights.

  • Step 5: Cure and Final Inspection

Your vehicle enters a dedicated cure period before delivery. Turnaround time ranges from one to five days depending on the package selected. Before we return your vehicle, we perform a thorough inspection to confirm the coating has bonded evenly and the finish meets our standard.

Your Questions, Answered

Ceramic Coating FAQs

  • How long does a ceramic coating last?

The longevity of your coating depends on the package selected. Every package is applied using XPEL Fusion Plus, which carries an 8-year warranty. With proper maintenance throughout the coverage period, your coating will continue to perform at a high level.

  • Will a ceramic coating prevent scratches?

Ceramic coatings add a meaningful layer of surface hardness that helps resist light scratches, swirl marks, and environmental contaminants. They are not scratch-proof, however. For maximum chip and scratch resistance, consider pairing your coating with paint protection film. Visit our PPF page to learn more.

  • Does ceramic coating require paint correction first?

Every ceramic coating package at Element Customs includes a paint correction step. Applying a coating over existing swirls, scratches, or surface defects would seal those imperfections in permanently. Our process always addresses the paint first to ensure the best possible long-term result.

  • How should I care for my vehicle after a ceramic coating?

We recommend hand washing with a pH-neutral soap and avoiding automatic car washes with abrasive brushes. A touchless wash is acceptable when hand washing is not practical. We will walk you through specific aftercare guidance at the time of your appointment.

  • Can ceramic coating be applied to any vehicle?

Ceramic coating is suitable for most vehicles, including daily drivers, luxury cars, performance vehicles, and trucks. If you have questions about whether your vehicle is a good candidate, reach out to our team and we will help you find the right solution.
